Josh Menon is like every other 19-year-old. He loves food, is a huge fan of football, and haunts music concerts and dreams of making it big and famous one day. But what sets him apart is the fact that he is probably closest to realizing his dreams than anyone of us. We don’t mean to cause any envy, but boy, he does.
All of 19, this musician-filmmaker has already racked up thousands of loyal followers and fans while singing the most genuine tunes, without pandering to the trends of what’s hot and what’s not.
His latest song titled ‘I Wrote This Song About You’, which went live on Friday, March 29 on all music streaming services, is a perfect testimony to his mature and almost meditative expressions.
“The song is essentially about how unfortunate circumstances can keep two very compatible people apart,” he notes, as he goes on to add, “The inspiration for all of my songs stems from a personal experience, so sharing this song with people is like sharing an intimate moment from my life. That’s one of the biggest reasons I love and make music; it gives me the freedom to be vulnerable.”
While he wrote his first song when he was just 14, his music has progressively developed over the years. His first EP ‘All Greek to Me‘ features guitar-centric sounds, the instrument he began learning and experimenting with. Then, with his album ‘Burn the Midnight Oil’, the influences are evidently more new-age, which he shares came with an intention to connect with more listeners. So what’s in store in the future? He tells us,
“With the new album that I’m about to release in a few months, there is a different feel to it. There are a few reasons for this. Obviously, since my music is inspired by my life, as my life changes, so will my music. Secondly, I make it a point to experiment with and change my music, because that’s what helps me grow as an artist.”
Based in Chicago, where he is studying filmmaking to become a director, Josh believes at the core of him is a story-teller, whether he is doing it with films or with music. He says,
“I think both filmmaking and music take turns in nurturing each other. I’m grateful to live in a time when everyone has the opportunity to express themselves through creative mediums. When we break them down to their roots, both mediums are essentially about storytelling. So each time I make a film, a music video, or a song, I’m growing as a storyteller and I’m learning how to face obstacles in conveying the stories that I want to share.”
However, he insists that his biggest goal is to connect with listeners…to inspire them.
“It doesn’t matter how many people, but I know that when I put my music out there, at least a few will connect to it. When I convert my ideas into lyrics, I think I’m essentially translating my experiences into something universal. And I think there’s no better time to do anything than right now (in the age of the internet). If someone really wants to make music, then go for it. And put it out there.”
