Movie Title: Mary Queen of Scots
Director: Josie Rourke
Star Cast: Saoirse Ronan, Margot Robbie, Guy Pearce, Jack Lowden, Ismael Cruz Cordova
Mary Queen of Scots incorporates 16th century Scotland and England as well as the ‘Catholic-Protestant church’ politics of that time.
Mary Stuart (Saoirse Ronan) – a Catholic – has returned to Scotland and establishes her position as the Queen of Scotland creating tension with her cousin, Elizabeth I (Margot Robbie) – a Protestant – the Queen of England.
Saoirse standouts as the young royal and fierce Queen of Scotland. Margot as Elizabeth I is equally powerful and somewhat unpredictable Queen. The costumes and makeup rightly deserve an Academy nomination. Its cinematography is spot on.
The film’s historical credibility is debatable. Too many characters introduction make it difficult to keep track of the story. The final act appears to be rushed making the story of succession seem absurd.
We give it 3 buzzing bees, especially for the queens.
