Rangoon finally released after much anticipation and has won a lot of accolades from the film industry. From intense fight scenes to love and patriotism, this celluloid drama has it all. Vishal Bhardwaj is known for portraying odd characters amazingly, and Rangoon sets another example of a VISHAL BHARDWAJ FILM!
Rangoon creates a new world entirely and pulls you in with its strong storytelling, fantastic cinematography, and a great sound design. The narration of a complicated love triangle with the backdrop of a periodic war will give you all sorts of ‘Casablanca’ feels. Yet, not at any point does Rangoon walk away from what it is – An intelligent movie with complex characters.
Rusi Billimoria, played by Saif Ali Khan, actor-turned-producer finds out that his fiancé Julia, portrayed by Kangana Ranaut, is cheating on him with Jamadar Nawab Malik, played by Shahid Kapoor. There are a lot of other factors at work here and these come together to a satisfying end.
Saif Ali Khan is so brilliant in his performance that you will love to hate his dominating and authoritative character. He is suave and sexy and VERY good at what he does. Shahid is exemplary in his performance and he owns his scenes wonderfully. The beautiful chemistry between Julia and Nawab Malik is something that will keep you hooked throughout the movie. Kangana Ranaut is goddamn brilliant! She is the star of the show. She moves from being Rusi’s Julia to Nawab’s Julia so seamlessly, that you’ll feel her during every scene.
While the performances are great and the storyline is captivating, the second half rushes through the climax. With so many things happening, the audience might have to take a minute to understand what just happened. However, it’s worth a watch!
