Kashmiris, in the light of one of the longest unrest during 2016 took personal offense when Dangal actress Zaira Wasim recently met Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Mehbooba Mufti. The chief minister was impressed by the young girl’s acting skills in the critically and commercially successful film Dangal and conveyed her appreciation to Zara and her family during the meeting.
Angry Kashmiris distraught under Mufti’s reign were offended by this gesture and took to social media to hurl insults at the 16-year-old. Zaira eventually issued a public apology on her twitter saying, “I know that many people have been offended and displeased by my recent actions or by the people I’ve met. I want to apologize to all those people I’ve unintentionally hurt.”
She further mentions that her recent actions were “not deliberate” and she hopes that she will be forgiven for her “unintentional” actions. Wasim’s post led to a storm of speculation ranging from whether her account was hacked, or whether she had received threats. The post also attracted a girth of support amongst her followers who do not consider the gesture offensive and thought the apology was uncalled for.
